Start with the week, then the ticket

The Open is golf in its most elemental setting: a championship played on links, with wind, bounces and the weather sharing the stage with the players. You do not need to play golf to enjoy it. A little preparation makes a substantial difference, though. Unlike a stadium visit, this is a moving event spread over a large piece of ground. Your ticket, your chosen base and your willingness to walk will shape the day more than your knowledge of anyone’s swing.

The 155th Open is at the Old Course, St Andrews, Fife, from 11–18 July 2027. Championship rounds are Thursday 15–Sunday 18 July; the earlier dates cover practice. Decide whether you want a relaxed introduction, a full competitive field or the final afternoon before choosing accommodation. Staying for one night after your last day can be more comfortable than combining a long day on your feet with a late journey home.

For a first visit, our recommendation is a practice day if seeing the course matters most, or Thursday or Friday if you want championship golf with plenty happening across the course. Sunday gives you the finish, but it also concentrates attention around the leaders. None of those is the universally best choice: choose the experience you actually want, then build the trip around it.

Tickets: the 2027 ballot has closed

The R&A’s 2027 ballot opened on 6 July and closed at 3pm UK time on 24 July 2026. Its published timetable put results in August and September 2026. If you applied, check your account and the payment instructions rather than assuming the application itself secured admission. The R&A’s help centre says an official resale platform will launch in 2027; the junior-ticket help article points to spring 2027. Check the resale platform for your chosen day when it opens.

Official resale is planned for 2027 through The R&A’s platform for One Club members; opening details remain to be announced. The help centre now says championship-day Ticket Plus has sold out, with a waiting list. Hospitality and authorised ticket-inclusive packages have separate availability. A hotel-only booking does not include course entry.

Use the official price table below to compare general admission days. These are the published 2027 tariffs; check the official seller for availability. Budget separately for travel, accommodation and meals. If a resale listing has a different total, inspect the official checkout and its conditions before deciding whether it still fits your budget.

Practice days, young visitors and digital entry

A practice ticket buys access on its stated day, not a promise that a particular player will appear at a particular time. Players prepare to their own plans. Treat the practice ground and a few holes as the core of your visit, with any favourite player sightings as a bonus. Championship days add a formal competitive schedule, but pairings and tee times are published much closer to play.

The 2027 terms define age bands on 10 July 2027: youth spectators are 16–24 and juniors are under 16. Junior admission is free under the published scheme, subject to availability, but a valid ticket is essential. The price page says juniors cannot be bought or listed through official resale; ask the ticket team about the correct arrangement before paying for a family trip.

Tickets are digital. Install the official ticket app when instructed, check that each person’s allocation is correct and practise opening it before leaving your accommodation. Do not depend on a screenshot being accepted. A charging cable and power bank can be more useful than another souvenir. If someone in your party cannot use a smartphone, contact the ticket team early about the supported arrangement.

Hospitality and upgrades

Compare the official hospitality products against the day you want. Range View is advertised from £975 per person and includes priority course entry, practice-range viewing, meals, a complimentary bar and parking. Road Hole, at The Jigger Inn, starts at £1,500 per person with course entry, meals, drinks and designated viewing. Both show limited availability. Read the exact date’s inclusions before buying: a hospitality price is not a general admission tariff.

Ticket Plus is a different upgrade, with a private base, viewing platforms, a £25 food voucher and a Park & Ride pass; drinks are bought separately. Championship-day places are sold out. Do not buy parking twice if your actual package already includes it.

Getting there

  • Leuchars nearest station; dedicated shuttle confirmed.
  • No public parking at Old Course; managed Park & Ride.
  • Designated signed taxi/private-hire ranks planned; advance booking recommended.
  • Free drop-off/pick-up area at each P&R.
  • Edinburgh tram to Haymarket, train to Leuchars, event shuttle.
  • Dundee nearest listed airport; Edinburgh and Glasgow also listed.

Official event travel plan

For The Open 2027 at St Andrews, plan the station or airport transfer as part of the outward booking. Save both directions. Check the final event approach.

Getting to St Andrews

Leuchars is St Andrews’ nearest railway station. For 2027, The R&A confirms extra rail capacity and a dedicated course shuttle, up to every five minutes at peak periods. Check ScotRail’s eventual event timetable and your return connection; shuttle frequency does not guarantee a particular train connection.

For flights, compare Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow against the routes actually operating from your departure airport. Edinburgh offers a public-transport approach using the tram to Haymarket, a train to Leuchars and the event shuttle. An inexpensive flight with an awkward late arrival may lose its saving once you add a transfer or extra night. Avoid flying home straight after the expected finish on Sunday; golf and the journey away can both run late.

Use the signed park-and-ride sites: there is no public course parking. Published daily car charges are £20 on 11–12 July and £25 on 13–18 July, discounted by £7 if bought before 5pm the previous day. The course bus is included; overnight parking is prohibited. Parking purchases require a free One Club account.

If you stay locally, investigate walking, wheeling or a normal bus connection before hiring a car. Ask where the hotel’s nearest usable stop is and whether the return service suits the end of your day. The final transport plan can change how useful an otherwise attractive room is. For a group, agree who holds parking confirmations, where you will meet if separated and what you will do if one person leaves early.

Entrance and park-and-ride street addresses published closer to the event.

For The Open 2027 at St Andrews, use the signed event drop-off and collection arrangements. Agree the taxi return in advance. Check permitted event collection points.

The course and site layout

Use the Old Course viewing guide to choose your holes, then use the final championship map for the permitted route between them. The 2027 positions of public entrances, toilets and the Spectator Village have not yet been verified. A course diagram shows golf holes; it does not establish where a spectator can cross the ropes.

2026 edition, for guidance: The official spectator guide describes a cashless site, a Spectator Village with food stalls, a children’s play area and giant screens, plus refill stations and seating at the practice ground. It permits small searched bags and personal food, excludes glass and alcohol brought from outside, and prohibits folding chairs. Check the new St Andrews advice before packing; these are not yet confirmed 2027 entry rules.

On the course: gates, grandstands and good viewing

The published 2027 gate times are 9am on 11 July, 7am on 12–14 July, 6am on 15–16 July and 7am on 17–18 July. Recheck before travel and leave time for security.

At St Andrews, the opening and finishing holes are natural draws. The Road Hole and the approach to the closing stretch are also obvious priorities for many first-time visitors. Our suggestion: investigate those areas using the public paths and viewing positions shown on the event map. Choose your position using the final spectator map and a marshal’s advice. Standing at the busiest green for hours is worthwhile only if that is the experience you want.

Try a mixed day: watch the practice ground, follow a group for a short stretch, then settle somewhere you can see several groups pass. A position with a view of both an approach and a tee can be rewarding, but keep behind the marked spectator lines. Grandstand access and any reserved areas must be checked against your ticket. Allow for queues and avoid assuming that a seat will remain available while you leave for lunch.

The 2026 spectator guide described catering, water refills and public viewing facilities; use the new 2027 map to find their locations at St Andrews. Carry a refillable bottle and plan a meal break before you become tired or hungry. If you have a dietary requirement, confirm suitable options nearer the event and ask what personal food can be brought in. Catering queues are easier to accept when they are part of your plan rather than an unwelcome surprise.

A day at the event

Our suggestion: arrive after the published gate opening with time for security, check the map board, then visit the practice area before settling at a few chosen holes. Break for food and a refill rather than attempting a nonstop circuit. For the closing groups, decide whether a crowded finishing-hole position or a less congested earlier hole suits you better. Set a leaving alarm from the return transport you actually need, allowing for the walk and queues.

A suggested sequence for your day

  1. After gates open: clear security and collect the site map.
  2. Check the draw and find the practice range viewing.
  3. Follow an early group or settle beside a favourite hole.
  4. Take food, water and toilet breaks between viewing sessions.
  5. Choose afternoon holes with your return walk in mind.
  6. Leave in time for your booked return connection.

Phones, cameras, bags and the weather

The 2027 ticket conditions allow personal still photographs if they do not disturb play or serve a commercial purpose. Flash, sound recording and video recording are prohibited. Keep phones muted with vibration disabled. Use designated autograph areas unless a player has given permission elsewhere, and follow officials’ instructions about movement and equipment.

The 2026 rules prohibit folding chairs, glass bottles, brought-in alcohol and drones, and allow small bags subject to search. The organiser’s 2027 permitted-items list will determine what you can bring to St Andrews. Check the current prohibited-items list before you leave home. Mobility aids have separate considerations; ask the accessibility team rather than assuming a seating restriction applies to an essential aid.

Pack for time spent standing as well as walking. A light waterproof, an insulating layer, comfortable grippy footwear, sun protection and a small dry bag for electronics cover more situations than a single heavy coat. Coastal wind can make a mild forecast feel quite different on the ground. If the weather deteriorates, follow officials’ instructions and adjust the day. No photograph or viewing position is worth ignoring a safety announcement.

Our suggestion for The Open: start near the practice range if spectator access is open, watch an early group, then settle by a closing hole after a food break. Check the leaderboard before moving. Leave enough time for your booked return.

Getting back to your accommodation

The organiser currently estimates play ending at 20:30 on Thursday and Friday and at 19:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Its 2027 transport table gives final course-to-Park-&-Ride buses at 22:00 on Thursday and Friday, 21:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and 20:00 on practice days. Timings can change. Those are event-bus deadlines, not permission to leave the eighteenth green at the last minute.

For Leuchars, check the final championship shuttle hours and your onward train in the ScotRail planner. A last shuttle does not guarantee a connection to Edinburgh or Dundee. Agree a taxi collection point before the day, using the signed event rank or approved private-hire pickup. Keep a torch or charged phone for the final walk to your accommodation; follow lit public routes and avoid shortcuts across the course or unlit rural roads.

Where to stay for The Open 2027

St Andrews is the first place to compare if you want your evenings in the town and the possibility of walking to the championship. Check the exact address: a property marketed as “St Andrews” may sit outside a comfortable walking distance. Ask about breakfast timing, luggage storage and steps at the entrance. Being able to return without another connection is valuable after a long day, but compare that convenience with the total price for your stay.

Dundee is an alternative for visitors who want a city base. Check your chosen hotel’s relationship to the station or bus stop, not just its relationship to the city centre. Cupar and Leuchars are also worth comparing for access to the rail corridor and local transport. A room beside a useful connection can be a better practical choice than a prettier rural address requiring a taxi twice daily.

Anstruther, Crail and the East Neuk suit a coastal break with golf as part of the trip. They need a carefully checked event-day connection; do not assume proximity on a map means an easy journey at the relevant hour. Edinburgh can work for people combining golf with a city stay, but the longer daily journey needs to be an intentional trade-off. Compare one comfortable local night with several days commuting before deciding.

Start looking as soon as your intended days are clear. Where available, a genuinely cancellable room can keep options open while you settle tickets and travel. Read the cancellation deadline, prepayment rule, occupancy and minimum-stay requirement yourself. Make a note of the deadline in your calendar. Compare the total stay cost now, including any minimum-night requirement and daily transfers.

Make a weekend of it

Evenings in and around St Andrews

Keep your first evening simple: check in, find breakfast supplies if needed and confirm the route to your morning departure point. After a day on the links, a nearby meal is usually more appealing than another complicated journey. In St Andrews, compare town-centre dining around South Street, Market Street and North Street with somewhere close to your accommodation. Book directly with the restaurant if a particular meal matters to your group, and check its 2027 opening hours and event-week menu.

An East Neuk base offers a different rhythm: an evening by the harbour or a short coastal stroll, weather permitting, can make the visit feel like a holiday rather than a commute. Dundee is better suited to a city evening. Whichever base you choose, check kitchen closing times and avoid scheduling dinner against the most optimistic finish-and-transfer estimate. Let the restaurant know if the group might be delayed, and keep a simple alternative in reserve.

West Sands — A long sandy beach beside the Old Course, suitable for a separate coastal walk. Approximate road distance from the mapped course area: 1.1 miles; view the mapped route.

For an evening in St Andrews, compare The Seafood Ristorante by the coast, The Tailend for fish and chips and Forgan’s on Market Street. See Welcome to Fife’s Open eating guide and book directly for your chosen date.

Official accessibility / event contact information

Accessibility: plan the whole route

Accessible parking must be reserved with accessibility@randa.org by 5pm BST on Friday 2 July 2027, subject to availability. The R&A requires both sides of a valid parking permit as evidence. Its dedicated accessible-parking shuttle stops outside the entrance. Arrange any carer ticket separately with the ticket team.

Ask about surfaces, gradients, accessible toilets, shuttle boarding and the distance from drop-off to your preferred viewing area. A platform can be accessible while the journey from your hotel is not. Send accommodation providers specific questions about door widths, lifts, showers and overnight equipment where relevant; the label “accessible room” is too broad to settle those details.

Build rest breaks into the itinerary and agree an earlier-exit plan. If a quieter visit is important, discuss the practice-day experience and available support with the organiser. The detailed 2027 accessibility guide and final spectator map should be checked when published. Ask the accessibility team for the final 2027 platform layout and any sensory-space location before planning the route you will use.
