Choose between course, city and coast

Carnoustie is the simplest starting point for a visit centred on its famous links. The club confirms that the Championship Course is part of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship alongside St Andrews and Kingsbarns. If you are following that event across all three venues, choose your overnight base from the days you will actually attend: a convenient Carnoustie room solves the Angus day but still leaves two journeys into Fife. Our Dunhill Links guide explains the event before you commit to an accommodation pattern.

For a single-course holiday, compare the whole evening as well as the morning transfer. A room near the links gives you more flexibility after a long day outside, while a city base can suit companions who want museums, shops and independent plans. The accommodation searches below include Carnoustie, Dundee, Arbroath and Broughty Ferry. These are area comparisons, not a ranking of individual properties: check the exact address, actual beds and payment conditions on each listing.

Carnoustie: put the links at the centre of the trip

Look first in Carnoustie if you want to spend several days at the same course. There is a railway station in town, but the pedestrian journey from your chosen room to the authorised entrance still needs checking. A property labelled Carnoustie can be outside the central streets, and access during a tournament may differ from the ordinary clubhouse approach. Ask for a route to the spectator gate rather than accepting a distance to the course boundary.

Our preference for a golf-heavy stay is somewhere with food within a manageable walk, space to dry waterproofs and an arrival arrangement that works after the journey north. The town also suits a group whose members may leave the golf at different times: being able to return independently removes pressure to spend every hour together. Check whether a self-catering booking requires a longer minimum stay than you need and whether cleaning charges alter the apparent nightly cost. A sea view is a pleasant extra; a comfortable bed and an uncomplicated way home are the essentials.

Dundee: useful for a mixed-interest party

Dundee is our city-base suggestion when only part of the group wants golf every day. Plan the rail journey from Dundee to Carnoustie with ScotRail, using the date of attendance and both outward and homeward searches. Start the calculation at the accommodation door, including the walk or bus to Dundee station and the final walk at Carnoustie. A headline station-to-station journey leaves out the parts that decide whether a day feels relaxed.

An evening in Dundee gives the party a chance to meet again over dinner without obliging everyone to make a coastal excursion. Choose a property with a clear connection to the station rather than assuming every city address is equally convenient. If you drive instead, establish the event's actual parking instructions before setting your route. Crossing between Angus and Fife for the other Dunhill venues adds a different journey; read our Dunhill accommodation comparison before making Dundee your base for the entire championship.

Arbroath: a coastal holiday with a rail leg

Arbroath is worth searching when you want the golf to sit within a broader Angus break. ScotRail's journey planner can establish the rail connection to Carnoustie for your chosen day; check the stopping pattern rather than assuming every train on the route serves both stations. Put the return service in the plan before choosing a restaurant booking. For a party travelling by car, the relevant tournament parking point is the destination, not whichever course entrance appears first on a navigation app.

Visit Angus highlights Arbroath's harbour heritage and Signal Tower Museum. That makes it a useful option for a companion who enjoys a separate outing while the golfer watches play. Our suggestion is to keep sightseeing and the golf on separate half-days or full days, rather than promising to fit everything around an uncertain finishing time. Search for an address with an easy route to the station or agreed collection point, and ask about luggage storage if your final golf day comes after check-out.

Broughty Ferry: neighbourhood evenings near Dundee

Broughty Ferry is another possibility for visitors who prefer a smaller coastal neighbourhood to a central-city stay. It has its own station, so use an operator search from Broughty Ferry to Carnoustie rather than substituting a Dundee timetable. Some journeys may require a different connection or waiting time; compare the actual attendance date. If the useful return services are too restrictive for your plans, a closer Carnoustie address may offer better value overall.

Keep the distinction between the station area and a wider suburban listing in mind. A family apartment farther inland might have welcome space but create an extra daily taxi ride. Ask where food shopping is, whether the kitchen is fully equipped and how the sleeping arrangements work when children go to bed before adults. Our suggestion is to choose Broughty Ferry for the kind of evening you want, then prove the golf transfer works, rather than assuming the coastal location automatically makes it the easiest course base.

Budget for transport and flexible terms

Begin the room search once you have selected your event dates and admission route. Carnoustie has ordinary golf visitors as well as event spectators, so compare refundable options early enough to have choices, without treating a listing's sales message as evidence that the whole town is full. Save the actual cancellation deadline and any deposit conditions with your ticket details. An accommodation reservation does not itself include tournament entry.

Calculate the cost for the complete party: nights, rail or road transfer, parking, breakfast and food after play. A lower room rate can lose its advantage if everyone needs separate taxis to reach the first train. For a multi-course Dunhill visit, include each day's transfer rather than averaging one easy Carnoustie journey across the holiday. If you split the stay between Angus and Fife, leave a realistic luggage-moving window and check whether your next property accepts bags before its usual check-in time.

Families, access and a comfortable return

For children, prioritise proper beds, somewhere to eat before an early start and a manageable route back when patience runs out. A day at a windy links can be tiring even without following a group for eighteen holes. Agree whether one adult can return with a child while others remain at the tournament, and ensure both adults have the accommodation access details. Review the organiser's re-entry rules before treating a nearby room as an afternoon rest stop.

For accessible accommodation, ask specific questions about entrances, lifts, bathroom layout and the space beside beds. Combine those answers with the station information and the championship's own accessible transport arrangements. National Rail publishes separate information for Carnoustie and Golf Street; do not assume the facilities or train calls are interchangeable. Anyone with limited walking stamina should measure the entire route, including queuing and the distance within the venue. An accessible room cannot compensate for an unsuitable last transfer.

Meals and time away from the golf

Visit Angus's food pages are useful for exploring local places to eat, including the region's Arbroath smokie tradition. Choose an evening meal near your overnight address when you expect a long tournament day; save a more ambitious coastal outing for a day without a fixed early alarm. Ask restaurants about food service times directly and leave a margin after your planned train. A booking that requires a sprint from the platform is rarely a restful end to the day.

In Carnoustie, a short seafront wander can be enough after golf. Visit Angus also describes the coastal path towards Arbroath, but a lengthy walk deserves its own daylight and weather plan. In Dundee or Broughty Ferry, keep the first evening close to your room while you establish the next morning's route. Pick up breakfast supplies before returning late if your accommodation's breakfast starts after your departure. A small amount of preparation protects both your budget and your appetite.

Make the final decision

Shortlist one property in the base that best suits the trip, then compare an alternative with a different transport trade-off. Write down the first useful arrival, a comfortable return and the cost for everyone sharing. Confirm where wet clothing can dry, who holds the booking and how late arrivals are handled. If the trip includes more than one tournament course, mark each venue day on a simple calendar before paying a deposit.

Use the Carnoustie venue guide to understand the links setting and the packing guide to keep luggage sensible. For us, Carnoustie wins when watching golf is the main purpose; Dundee wins when the rest of the party needs a city holiday; Arbroath or Broughty Ferry deserves a look when coastal evenings matter too. The best booking is the one whose entire day you can explain, from leaving the front door to getting back fed and comfortable.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Barr Cabs advertises local taxi/private-hire bookings for this area. Official app listings for the Carnoustie and Angus golf bases: Uber — Dundee. City listings do not guarantee cars at a course. Pre-book both journeys and agree the permitted collection point. Ask about child seats, luggage and wheelchair space when booking. Keep the driver’s number and a fallback plan.

Carnoustie or Golf Street?

Use Carnoustie station as your practical rail gateway. Golf Street halt has a very limited stopping service; a nearby station marker does not mean a useful train is available. Compare both directions in the ScotRail journey planner before booking.
