The confirmed championship week is 30 July–6 August 2028, with competition from 3–6 August.

Book for the confirmed late-summer dates

The R&A confirms that The Open returns to Royal Lytham & St Annes for the week of 30 July–6 August 2028. The DP World Tour's announcement identifies championship play as 3–6 August. Use those exact dates when searching, rather than assuming the championship falls in its familiar mid-July position. Our suggestion: decide which days you want to attend first, then add arrival and departure nights that keep the trip comfortable.

The venue name can be confusing when browsing accommodation. Lytham and St Annes are distinct parts of the wider destination, while the golf club sits within a settled area rather than on a remote strip of coast. A seaside address is not automatically the closest address to the public entrance. Compare the full journey and check event access when published. With planning this far ahead, avoid treating an unavailable search result as proof that the destination is sold out: properties may release rooms on different booking horizons.

St Annes: our first comparison for proximity

St Annes is our suggestion for a golf-focused stay close to the host area. Northern provides information for St Annes-on-the-Sea station, which is useful when assessing rail arrival. Choose the property against the actual course entrance to be used by spectators, not merely the nearest point on the course boundary. Ask the provider about the pedestrian route once championship instructions are available and check whether it suits the mobility and stamina of everyone travelling.

For several attendance days, proximity can simplify breakfasts and evenings. A room near dining and shops may save another journey after you return. If staying on the seafront, confirm the walk to the tournament approach rather than assuming coastline and course access coincide. Families should compare kitchens, sleeping arrangements and somewhere to dry clothing. For anyone with limited mobility, a nearby property still needs suitable access, bathroom facilities and a workable route to any official accessible transport. Make those requirements part of the initial search rather than an afterthought.

Ansdell and Fairhaven: investigate exact addresses

Ansdell and Fairhaven deserve a separate search because proximity to Royal Lytham can make an address here useful. Northern and National Rail both provide official information for Ansdell & Fairhaven station. Our suggestion: examine these areas when you want to keep the local travel burden modest, while checking individual properties carefully. A destination label alone says little about the route from the door to a controlled championship entrance.

For a rail arrival, plan the journey to the local station and the transfer with luggage to your accommodation. For each golf day, establish whether walking is appropriate or whether you need an approved vehicle connection. Do not assume a short distance across a map can be covered through the course or private grounds. Ask about key collection, groceries, early departures and luggage storage on your final day. If an apartment fits the group, confirm all beds and any stairs before booking. A well-located ordinary room may provide a better trip than a larger property whose access is awkward.

Lytham: choose it for the whole break

Lytham is another area to compare when you want a coastal Lancashire break alongside the championship. Our suggestion: choose it for the stay you want outside golf, then make the daily link to Royal Lytham explicit. Use the rail operator's planner if trains form part of the journey, checking the correct local station and the final walk or event transfer. If driving, follow the organiser's spectator parking plan when available instead of routing directly to the clubhouse.

A family or mixed group may place more value on the accommodation and evenings than on reducing every minute of the commute. Discuss that trade-off before booking. Check whether companions can make independent plans if the shared car goes to the golf. For consecutive attendance days, calculate the repeated transport costs and decide whether a closer property would be worth the difference. Keep dinner flexible after the final round: leaving a busy event and rejoining ordinary local travel can take longer than the shortest journey suggested by a map.

Blackpool: compare individual neighbourhoods

Blackpool is a natural wider-area accommodation search, but it covers addresses with very different access to stations and the route towards St Annes. Our suggestion: compare the actual location, room arrangement and connection rather than treating the town as a single budget option. No destination is automatically cheaper once dates, guest numbers, parking and daily travel are included. Families may value a base offering its own holiday activities, especially if some people skip tournament days.

For a rail-based journey, check which Blackpool station you need and the service towards the Lytham St Annes area, then add the event's final approach. Do not assume the station nearest your incoming long-distance train is the one most useful for the golf. For driving, establish the official parking destination and the accommodation's parking conditions. Ask about noise and the position of your room if early starts matter. A place that suits a lively evening break may be less suitable when you want several quiet nights before full days watching golf.

Preston: a regional rail base with another leg

Preston is worth examining for travellers whose wider railway journey already passes through it. Our suggestion: consider it as a regional base only after checking the onward local service and your complete daily return. A useful arrival interchange is not necessarily the best accommodation location for repeated golf attendance. Add the walk or taxi from the property to the station, the local train, the final event connection and security to each morning.

For the evening, select a return you can reach comfortably rather than relying on the last theoretical departure. If driving from Preston, compare the published event parking approach with your property address and allow room for queues. Staying farther away can suit a short visit or a combined Lancashire itinerary, but it should be a deliberate choice. Ask about breakfast and bag storage if you will leave after golf on your final day. The room may be good value only if the transport arrangement remains affordable and manageable for everyone sharing it.

Early planning without paying for assumptions

Begin with confirmed event dates and a sensible room shortlist. If a provider has not opened bookings for summer 2028, ask when it expects to do so and compare other options patiently. Our suggestion: prefer clear cancellation terms while ticket and travel arrangements are still developing. Read prepayment dates, minimum stays and special-event conditions in the actual booking. Keep copies of what you accept, and do not infer that an ordinary room reservation includes championship tickets.

If sharing a rental, agree the budget, sleeping arrangements and division of costs before placing a deposit. Establish who will manage communication and what happens if somebody withdraws. Calculate accommodation, food, local fares, parking and vehicle hire together. For several golf days, a kitchen may help with routines and costs, provided it is properly equipped. Avoid claiming that a faraway room saves money until you have priced its daily connections. Release any unwanted cancellable alternative promptly once you have settled the trip.

Make the stay work for families and access needs

Families benefit from a calm arrival evening, enough room to rest and a food plan that does not depend on a late restaurant meal after every round. Check beds, cots if needed, and where wet shoes or waterproofs can dry. Decide whether everybody will attend the same golf days. If the party splits, ensure both groups can travel independently rather than leaving one without the car or the room key.

For access requirements, request details about entrances, lifts, bathrooms and the route to transport. Contact the organiser about championship access and the right arrangements for your needs; the accommodation's own accessibility description covers only part of the trip. Keep the final day free of an over-tight connection, particularly if luggage must be collected elsewhere. Use the future venues guide, Royal Lytham venue guide and spectator guides alongside this shortlist. A comfortable base gives you the freedom to enjoy the golf rather than constantly watching the clock.
