The British Masters and Birmingham: two days

Our suggestion is a Birmingham arrival day followed by a full British Masters visit at The Belfry.

Stay a second night if you want to enjoy the closing golf without a same-evening train or long drive dictating your departure.

Make one golf day the centrepiece

The 2027 DP World Tour schedule places the British Masters at The Belfry on 19–22 August. For a two-day break, choose a single competition day and build your arrival around it. Our suggestion is a Friday city day followed by Saturday golf, or Saturday in Birmingham followed by Sunday's final round. The latter works best with a Sunday-night room if the finish matters more than getting home early.

The British Masters event hub covers admission and spectator planning. Consult the Belfry venue guide before choosing your course-day travel, because a Birmingham address does not give you a rail journey directly to the tournament entrance. The final road stage belongs in the plan from the beginning, alongside the room and ticket.

This itinerary suits mixed-interest companions especially well. A city base gives someone who skips the golf a full independent day, while the spectator can return for dinner. Make that separation deliberate: agree who holds the room keys, whether anyone needs the car and where you will reunite. An easy evening together is more useful than trying to persuade every traveller to spend the whole weekend around the leaderboard.

Day 1 morning: reach Birmingham and settle in

Arrive at the station or airport with the accommodation journey saved on your phone. Birmingham has several central rail stations, so confirm which one your train actually uses and how that relates to the room. If you arrive before check-in, arrange luggage storage with the property rather than assuming that a paid attraction will hold bags. Keep the first planned activity flexible enough to absorb a travel delay.

Our suggestion is a late breakfast or early lunch, followed by a short walk to get your bearings. Choose the area around your accommodation so that you can return easily if you need to change clothes or collect something. Use Visit Birmingham for current attraction listings and access information. One well-chosen visit is enough for the morning; saving some energy now leaves room for a proper evening and tomorrow's walking.

Before going sightseeing, confirm the next morning's golf transfer. If you plan to drive, find the official spectator parking instructions and put the correct destination in the navigation. If using a pre-booked vehicle, agree the meeting point and ask about event restrictions. Resolve the breakfast question too: a room with a late breakfast service may need a takeaway alternative before an early course departure.

Day 1 afternoon: choose a city interest

Our suggestion is to pick one Birmingham theme rather than shuttle among several unrelated sights. You might choose a cultural attraction, a neighbourhood walk or a relaxed shopping afternoon using the tourist board's current suggestions. Check the actual opening day and admission arrangements for anything essential. A Saturday arrival can have a different programme from a weekday, and a special exhibition may need its own ticket.

Leave a gap for sitting down and a drink. Spectator holidays already involve plenty of walking, and a city afternoon need not become another endurance test. If the weather is poor, replace the long walk with an indoor attraction close to your planned dinner. Companions travelling with children should choose an outing that gives them something to do rather than simply a route between adult interests.

Return to your room before dinner if that makes tomorrow easier. Charge the phone, lay out the golf clothing and take out anything the tournament prohibits from your day bag. The golf packing guide offers a useful check without encouraging you to carry a heavy rucksack. Put the admission reference and transfer information somewhere both travellers can find them, particularly when one person made every booking.

Our suggestion for a concrete afternoon is the Library of Birmingham area followed by a short canalside walk towards Brindleyplace, choosing supper around the part of the city you enjoy most. Visit Birmingham identifies both the canals and Jewellery Quarter as visitor areas. If jewellery history is your stronger interest, choose the Jewellery Quarter as the main outing instead of adding it after the canal circuit. Check the library’s current visitor access with Birmingham City Council before depending on an indoor stop.

Day 1 evening: let Birmingham supply the occasion

Make tonight the meal you look forward to. Our suggestion is to choose a restaurant around the accommodation or your afternoon area, reserve directly if necessary and give the kitchen any dietary information early. This is the predictable evening of the trip, so it is a better place for a special reservation than immediately after the golf. Look at the current menu rather than assuming an old visitor review reflects what is served.

Keep late-night plans in proportion to the next day. A full tournament visit involves travelling, standing and walking, followed by the return journey. Agree a sensible finishing time if your group wants another drink, and let anyone needing an early night leave without an awkward cross-city trip. For a non-drinking companion or the designated driver, make the meal and conversation the occasion rather than a string of venues.

Before sleep, check the forecast and the event's latest spectator notice. Pack a waterproof layer even if the morning looks bright, and include sunscreen when appropriate. Decide whether you will buy lunch at the course or take permitted food. A small amount of preparation avoids wasting the first golf hour looking for an item that could have been bought near the room the previous evening.

Day 2 morning: The Belfry and the Brabazon

Set out using the published tournament access instructions, allowing for queues after the road journey. The Belfry's ordinary resort entrance and your spectator entry arrangements may serve different purposes during the event. Keep any parking or admission code ready before reaching staff. If an accessible entrance or assistance has been arranged, save the named contact and the instructions separately from the general directions.

Our suggestion is to start with a contained viewing circuit. Find the main facilities, watch several groups from one position and then follow a player for a few holes. The famous course moments are appealing, but continually chasing them can leave you with more walking than golf. Choose a view where you can understand the shot, see its outcome and move without disturbing the next player.

Learn the crossing points and follow marshal instructions, including when a crowd ahead appears to be moving. Keep phones in the required mode and check the day's photography rules. For a first visit, our first-timer guide explains why a mixture of stationary viewing and short walks usually works well. Take your first food or comfort break before tiredness starts deciding the whole afternoon.

Day 2 afternoon: follow the competition, then leave well

After lunch, decide what you want from the remaining golf. Our suggestion is to watch a few consecutive holes with one group, then settle near a later hole if your departure allows. Use the leaderboard to understand who is in contention rather than relying only on the loudest applause. A drink and a seated rest can make the final hour more enjoyable than pressing on until your feet hurt.

For a Sunday visit, decide in advance whether staying for the conclusion is compatible with your journey home. A tournament can run behind its expected rhythm, and a train connection will not adjust itself to the final putt. An extra night in Birmingham or near the resort is worth comparing when the closing round is the reason for travelling. If leaving early, choose a clear departure point and accept that some golf will continue afterwards.

Use the designated pickup area for your booked vehicle and allow for the walk there. Drivers should take a break before a long road journey, particularly after a hot or wet day outside. Our suggestion for the evening is an easy meal after you have left the event traffic, or supper near the room if staying over. Keep a snack and water available so that a delayed exit does not turn into a hungry argument.

Where to stay and how to get around

Birmingham is the natural city-base search for this plan. Compare the room's relationship to your arrival station, your dinner area and the golf pickup point. A central room can simplify the city half of the holiday, but check parking costs if bringing a car. Our Belfry and Birmingham accommodation guide helps compare the city with alternatives closer to the course.

Sutton Coldfield is another base to examine if you want a shorter regional stay with a planned road transfer. A room at The Belfry itself puts the resort at the centre of the holiday, subject to actual availability and event access arrangements. Accommodation at a venue should never be assumed to include tournament admission, parking or hospitality. Read the package contents carefully and ask the provider about anything unclear before paying.

Use National Rail for your main rail journey and Transport for West Midlands for local transport planning. Check the full return as well as the outward leg, especially on a Sunday. The event organiser must confirm any championship shuttle; a regional journey planner cannot promise one. For shared taxis, agree collection details and passenger numbers before the morning, then keep the booking reference available to someone other than the person whose phone is most likely to run flat.

Adapt the weekend for different walking needs

Decide your comfortable amount of walking before planning the city afternoon and golf day together. Our suggestion is to alternate a more active outing with a seated meal or indoor visit, then leave some energy for the journey home. Anyone who needs step-free routes should ask about the particular accommodation room and tournament facilities directly. A general description of a building does not explain every doorway, surface or transfer involved in the weekend.

At the championship, agree a small initial viewing area rather than committing immediately to a complete circuit. Identify refreshments, toilets and the route back towards your departure point. A shorter afternoon can still contain a satisfying amount of golf if you spend it watching several groups play the same shots. Let the people with more energy take an extra loop while others rest, using an agreed meeting time to bring the group together again.

For city-only companions, choose an independent Birmingham outing through the tourist board and provide separate room access before leaving. Our suggestion is to share the special meal on the first evening, when everyone can arrive predictably, and treat the second supper as flexible. That gives the weekend a shared occasion without making the non-golfer wait indefinitely for a tournament finish or a slow trip out of the car park.
