Choose a settled base in Virginia Water, Ascot or Windsor and arrange authorised admission before fixing the rest of the weekend.

Choose one golf day and give Windsor its own time

The DP World Tour lists the 2027 BMW PGA Championship event period as 22–26 September at Wentworth Club, with championship rounds from 23–26 September. Our suggestion uses Saturday 25 September for golf and Sunday 26 September for Windsor. It is a compact two-day plan, best supported by arriving on Friday night if your homeward journey is long. Saturday arrival can work for nearby travellers, but only with a generous margin before your intended entry.

Buy the correct dated admission through the official event channels. Read what is included in general admission, upgraded products or hospitality instead of treating them as interchangeable. If you particularly want to see Sunday's conclusion, reverse the order: Windsor on Saturday and the championship on Sunday. Give the golf its own day rather than squeezing a castle visit into the same morning.

This itinerary favours manageable distance and a decent meal over a large collection of attractions. A full day watching golf involves walking, standing and attention even when you never pick up a club. Plan a shorter Sunday walk if the party is tired, and let anyone less interested in golf have a meaningful say in the Windsor choice. Two enjoyable days beat two days spent trying to recover lost time.

Day 1 — Saturday morning: reach Wentworth calmly

Our suggestion: eat before leaving your base and follow the DP World Tour's event-specific travel instructions when published. Virginia Water is a useful station to investigate for the area, but the correct spectator route and any event transfer must come from the organiser. A normal station-to-club journey may differ from the championship entrance arrangement. Check the final approach after choosing the rail or road portion.

If driving, use authorised event parking and the supplied navigation instructions. An ordinary Wentworth address can lead to the wrong gate or a road affected by restrictions. Keep parking confirmation accessible and leave space for queuing. Travellers arriving by rail should check engineering work and the return timetable before leaving, especially when an onward connection is tied to a specific train.

Set a clear meeting point for anyone arriving separately. 'At Wentworth' is too vague for a large event site. Agree how long you will wait and where someone should go if mobile messages are delayed. Have the ticket ready in the required form, put the phone on silent and carry only what the current admission policy permits.

Begin the golf with a modest viewing target. Follow a player for a few holes if that interests you, then stop where several groups will pass. This gives the morning a shape without turning it into a race around the perimeter. A good view of one sequence of shots is more satisfying than constantly moving towards action you arrive too late to see.

Day 1 — Saturday afternoon: watch, rest and enjoy supper

Our suggestion: take a seated lunch break before returning to the course. Use the leaderboard to choose the afternoon rather than assuming your morning player will remain the only story. Keep your route within the walking capacity of the least energetic companion and treat crossings as places to wait patiently. Marshals need a clear route and players need quiet while preparing their shots.

Choose a viewing position with enough comfort to stay for a while. Standing still can make cool conditions feel colder than they did on the walk from the entrance, so have a layer ready. Keep water and permitted snacks available, and do not wait until someone is uncomfortable before looking for facilities. Our first tournament guide helps set a realistic pace for the day.

Leave when you have had a satisfying visit, allowing for the journey to your base. There is no prize for staying so long that dinner becomes an anxious search for an open kitchen. Book a restaurant only if its timing fits a flexible return. Otherwise choose a simple meal close to your accommodation and save a leisurely sit-down lunch for Windsor tomorrow.

If the weather has been wet, put drying clothes ahead of another outing. Check where shoes can be left without damaging the room and hang layers as the property permits. Charge the phone, set aside Sunday's clothing and look up the route to Windsor. A few minutes of preparation now makes the next day feel like a different holiday experience rather than another logistical exercise.

Day 2 — Sunday morning: Windsor at walking pace

Our suggestion: make Windsor the focus after breakfast. Collect or store luggage according to your accommodation arrangement, then travel into town without trying to add another attraction on the way. Choose the parking or railway station you intend to use before setting off. Windsor has separate stations, so save the exact station name and route for departure rather than relying on a general search for the town.

The official Windsor visitor website lists Windsor Castle, the Thames and nearby parkland among the area's attractions. Pick one principal activity. A castle visit needs its own admission and access information, including any changes related to royal or ceremonial use. If that is your choice, book through the attraction's official route and leave enough time to enjoy it without watching the clock throughout.

For a gentler morning, choose a town and riverside walk with a café stop. Stay on public routes, respect barriers and make the walk short enough that the return is comfortable. A scenic riverside location does not require a long-distance walking plan. Sit for a while and enjoy the change from yesterday's competitive atmosphere.

The Long Walk or another appropriate public route in Windsor Great Park is an optional alternative for those wanting more outdoor time. The park's official website provides maps, visitor guidance and access information. Select one accessible section that suits the weather and the group. Avoid adding a full park circuit after a busy golf day simply because it looks compact on a phone map.

Day 2 — Sunday afternoon: lunch and an easy departure

Our suggestion: choose lunch in the part of Windsor nearest your next step, then leave space for collecting bags and reaching transport. A restaurant reservation can give the day a pleasant anchor if you have confirmed the travel arrangements. Check menus for the whole party and raise allergies directly with the restaurant. Leave a flexible alternative in case an attraction visit or train is delayed.

For a later departure, spend the remaining time browsing or taking a short second walk. Choose something that can be stopped without losing prepaid admission. That gives you control over the final hour instead of adding another fixed deadline. If your bags are stored outside Windsor, include the journey to collect your bags before considering how much time is left.

Driving home after a long weekend calls for an alert, rested driver. Agree the driving plan before lunch, take breaks as needed and avoid turning a scenic detour into an unexpectedly late arrival. Rail travellers should check disruption and platform information, keeping the ticket and any reservation easy to reach. Neither mode becomes simpler through leaving the return decision until the last minute.

If you reverse the days for Sunday championship golf, make Windsor the whole Saturday outing and keep Sunday evening clear. A final round can finish later than your preferred departure time, while transport queues add uncertainty. Consider a Sunday-night stay if the course conclusion matters more than arriving home early. That extra night changes the accommodation booking, not the two-day sightseeing outline.

Which base works for this weekend?

Virginia Water suits visitors who put the Wentworth part first and want to investigate a nearby rail gateway. The accommodation's actual location still matters: a rural address described using the station's name may need a taxi. Ask how to reach meals, whether parking is included and what breakfast arrangements are possible. Check the published spectator entrance before judging a property by its apparent distance from the club.

Ascot is an alternative for travellers who find a suitable room and are comfortable arranging the complete golf journey. Do not assume the town label means a direct event shuttle or a short walk. Compare the room's position with both Saturday's departure and Sunday's Windsor route. The right place for a driver may be awkward for someone relying on public transport, so make that distinction before paying.

Windsor is our choice if you want the evening and Sunday sightseeing close together. It puts more weight on planning Saturday's outward and return travel. Choose accommodation within a manageable walk of food and your transport route, and ask about baggage storage after checkout. For a group, compare the full cost of rooms and transfers rather than favouring the cheapest advertised nightly rate.

Our Wentworth and Surrey accommodation guide explains the wider area. In every base, look at cancellation terms, the number and type of beds, stairs and bathroom access. Clarify late arrival arrangements for Friday and any restrictions on Sunday luggage collection. A comfortable practical room contributes more to a two-day trip than a feature you will never have time to use.

Getting between the course, your room and Windsor

South Western Railway's journey planner is the appropriate official starting point for Virginia Water and Windsor rail travel. Use it for the exact date and stations, including any changes. Do not assume two nearby places have a direct train. Review weekend engineering work again nearer departure and keep a workable alternative if a connection is interrupted.

For a car-based trip, arrange overnight parking and separate event parking. Windsor visitor information and the Great Park website provide guidance for their own visitor areas. Read each site's instructions instead of using one parking reservation as though it covers the whole weekend. Keep valuables out of sight and avoid leaving all your luggage in a vehicle while visiting attractions if a property storage option is available.

Food works best when it follows your location. Have breakfast near the room, lunch where you already are and Saturday supper close to where the transport ends. Save Windsor's longer meal for Sunday when you control the pace. The BMW PGA hub, Wentworth venue guide and golf packing guide complete the practical details without adding another destination to this weekend.
